


December Programming at the
High Ridge Civic Center
The Jefferson County Parks and Recreation Department will be sponsoring martial arts classes and Zumba at the High Ridge Civic Center in December.
Martial Arts classes begin Tuesday, December 6, 2011. The co-ed classes are designed for ages 6 and up. The classes will be held on Tuesday and Thursday evenings from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. This class will allow the students to improve their body, mind and spirit through training in the art of Jujitsu. The cost for the class is $30.00 per month!
Zumba classes will be held on Mondays beginning December 5 and Wednesdays beginning December 7. Each class will be held from 7 to 8 p.m.
Our certified Zumba instructor is Tammi Ciaravino and enrollment in this class is only $15 per month and $20 for the Wednesday class. Register online at http://www.jeffcomo.org/parks. Giving Back
Christmas Tree Recycling Program Ready for the Season
The Jefferson County Parks and Recreation Department, in cooperation with the Crystal City Park Board, will be sponsoring its annual Christmas Tree Recycling Program from December 26, 2011 through January 16, 2012. Dispose of your natural Christmas Tree with us!
Recycling locations are as follows: Pleasant Valley Nature Preserve, Highway PP and Byrnes Mill Road, High Ridge; Sunridge Park, 8093 Tower Road, North of Hillsboro; The Courthouse Lower Parking Lot in Hillsboro; and Crystal City Park. Designated drop areas for your tree will be marked.

Youth Instructional
Basketball Program 2012
The Jefferson County Parks and Recreation Department, in cooperation with the Northwest School District and Sacred Heart School in Crystal City will be sponsoring a Youth Instructional Basketball Program, now in it's 21st year. This program, which emphasizes instruction, learning and fun, will play for nine Saturdays at the Northwest Early Childhood Center, January 21-March 17, and Sacred Heart School in Crystal City, January 28-March 24, 2012. The first three Saturdays will be devoted to instruction, while the last six will be league play.
Co-ed teams will be offered at ages 7-9 and 10-12 at both Crystal City, and House Springs, with deadlines of January 6 for the House Springs program, and January 13 for the Crystal City program. Registration fee, which includes a full uniform and medal for each player, is only $70.
In addition, a MANDATORY skills evaluation will be required for all players in our program! This evaluation will take place on Saturday, January 14, at the Northwest Early Childhood Center, and Saturday, January 21 at Sacred Heart Gym in Crystal City, from 9 am to 11:00 am at both locations. These will be done to try to create more even teams in each age group, and is low pressure and fun!
Registration is being taken now, by mail, at the office, or by registering online by clicking on the link below. Register early, because these sites may fill prior to the deadline dates! In addition, paid referee positions and volunteer coaches are still needed!

The Karst Hydrogeology of Jefferson County Presentation

Learn more about the way water acts as it makes its way through the earth's crust in the program especially tailored for Jefferson County.
Sponsored by the Belews Creek Watershed Partnership, Blake Smotherman, geologist with the Department of Natural Resources, will introduce karst hydrology in a down to earth way including its main features and processes.
Some of the features that will be discussed are
springs, caves, sinkholes and groundwater.
Smotherton will apply these features and processes to the
features found in the earth’s crust (geology) of Jefferson County and the Belews Creek Watershed.
The presentation will be held at 6:30 p.m. at the Hillsboro Civic Club in Hillsboro. The event is FREE to the public.
