Relay for Life Northwest Raises $30,000 +

This year's Relay for Life theme was "Decades," and here in the Northwest area, 22 teams had a whole lot of fun dressing up in the fashions of decades on Friday, May 11 at Northwest High School.  But whether they were strolling in the tie dyed sixties or the dancing in big hair 80's there was a serious side to their steps.  Through the years the Relay for Life Northwest has put a real face on cancer, the faces of family, friends and neighbors.  They come out to celebrate those who have survived, to remember those they've lost and to walk to fight cancer through the night.

This year, their efforts raised more than $30,000 for the American Cancer Society, more than twice what they raised last year. Realty Executives Premiere took the lead raising about $11,000 through a variety of activities.

"We had a Charity Poker Tournament, made gift baskets and had a barbecue," said Chuck Maher, broker and owner of the company and organizer of this year's Relay.

But they didn't stop there.  During the Relay event, they provided face painting, haircuts and the sweet hands of a massage therapist to round off their contribution.

Other teams did their part to make a difference in the fight against cancer too.  The Land of the Giants Truck Club brought their big bad trucks and barbecued.  TimberRidge Community Church had headbands, lap beads, beach photos and snacks available.  Faith Community Church were "Praying 4 a Cure."  And Troop Cedar Hill had a pizza party!

"There were two D.J.s. The U.S. Navy Reserves provided the flag ceremony. The team at the High Ridge Library arranged for the hot air balloon rides," Maher said. "Bo Matthews from WIL brought Bo Foot and the t-shirt cannon. They were shooting t-shirts at the kids."
Earlier in the evening, the Survivors gathered with their care givers for the
Survivor dinner. The meal was provided by Pegg's On the Boulevard in High Ridge.  In fact, about 40 businesses in the Highway 30 Corridor sponsored the event in one way or another.
Games and other activities went on through the night, and the event ended at 6 a.m. on Saturday.  Another lap, another year, another round in the fight against cancer.

Funds raised by communities for the American Cancer Society provide for research and programs that offer patient support, prevention, detection and the treatment of cancer.
